How to Create an Edible Lamp Post for Your Gingerbread House

Updated: Oct 12, 2023

Below is a step-by-step photo tutorial on how to make an edible lamp post and fence post for a gingerbread house house. I used this method for the edible lamp and fence posts for Heidi's Gingerbread House.

To make the edible lamp

Place a small yellow gum-drop onto wax paper.

ree

Place a dot of Royal Icing onto the wax paper, about the same size as the bottom of the gum drop.

ree

Squish gum-drop onto drop of Royal Icing

ree

With Royal Icing make a line from the top of the gum drop down to the bottom, lifting slightly on the bottom to form little hooks (or whatever shape you desire).

ree

Place a small drop of Royal Icing on top of gum drop and place a black dragee on top (if desired).

ree

Make more than you think you will need. Let dry several hours.

To make the edible lamp posts

Choose your desired marshmallows (20 jumbo or 40 regular). There are many different marshmallows on the market now, in a variety of colors. If you cannot locate colored marshmallows, add paste food coloring when the marshmallows are melted.

ree

Melt 1/4 cup (1/2 a stick) margarine in a large pan on low.

ree

Add marshmallows (20 jumbo or 40 regular).

ree

Keep stirring the marshmallows gently as they melt.

ree

Stir until smooth then remove from heat.

ree

Use some form of crispy rice cereal (plain, fruity, or chocolate).

ree

Approx. 6 - 7 cups of crispy rice cereal.

ree

Add crispy rice cereal to melted marshmallows.

ree

Stir well until combined.

ree

The mixture will be hot - let cool for a few minutes until you can handle the mixture! Make sure your hands are WELL GREASED! (use butter or margarine).. very important or the mix will stick terribly to your hands.

ree

Place about a golf ball/baseball size of mix into your WELL GREASED hand.

ree

Roll and press the mix into the desired post size.

ree

Lay on wax paper to harden (make more than you think you will need).

ree

With Royal Icing, place onto your gingerbread display where desired, attaching your wrought-iron fence (as needed).

ree

Place a small amount of Royal Icing on top of the fence post and place your now dry/hardened Lamp fixture.

Lamps can also be placed under the porch as light decorations.
